It’s hard to believe Halloween is next week!

Where did 2018 go?

Well, 2018 isn’t over yet. If you’re looking to get one more trail race in before year’s end here’s a list of 10 top trail races to consider.

Moab Trail Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K


Location: Moab, UT

Description: Only the 1/2 Marathon on Sunday has openings – Hurry!
The ½ Marathon course follows the first 9 miles of the Marathon Course. Then you’ll get a break, technically but not physically as you’ll climb up the switchbacks of Kane Creek Road, then back down where you’ll enter the depths of Kane Creek Drainage.



This unique canyon is rarely travelled but absolutely beautiful. Most of the canyon is runable and along hard packed sand with a bit of water. Some sections are on single-track along the shore and other sections through deeper water (not more than knee deep, unless the Beavers go to work before the race!) You’ll travel abouta mile through the canyon, and then along the dirt road for a ½ mile and a final 1/2 mile of fun singletrack to the finish.


Red River Trail Run 26.2M, 13.1M, 10K, 5K

Location: Callisburg , Texas

Description: The trail system that the race is held is on dirt trails, which vary in condition from flatter, smooth “runnable” sections to more technical areas with rocks and roots with steeper hills. Please see the video below for a general idea of the terrain. All profits of the Red River Trail Run will benefit Abigail’s Arms Cooke County Family Crisis Center whose mission is to embrace children, individuals and families to inspire change and create stronger, safer communities through education and awareness. The focus of this benefit will be the services provided for children who are victims of crime.


The Urban Ultra – Houston 5k, 10k, 15k, 25k, and 50k

Date: December 1, 2018

Location: Houston, TX

Description: Known for its architectural prowess, the Houston skyline boasts some of the tallest building in the state. Unlike other cites, the well developed trail system that runs at the feet of massive skyscrapers will leave you dizzy and wanting more. Lined by blue lights that mimic the moon’s phases, the Urban Ultra Houston showcases a unique view of one of the nation’s largest cities.

We will start the race in the evening and watch the skyline and night come alive as the sun goes down. This is an urban trail run mainly on paved trails. The looped course will be run at night so racers will need to bring a headlamp. This race is designed to allow road runners to crossover and get the trail experience.

If you are looking for a unique experience where you can break into the ultra scene, then this is the race for you.


Barrier Island Ultra 5K, 10K, 13.1M, 26.2M, 50K, 50M

Date: November 10, 2018

Location: Mustang Island , Texas

Description: Run on one of the longest barrier islands in Texas on Mustang Island!
Just adjacent to the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world, Mustang Island gets its name from the wild horses that roamed the island for hundreds of years. This chain of barrier islands protect miles of coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teeming with life. They are also a safe nesting ground for the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle and a haven for over 380 bird species.

Runners will start the race at our salty seaside bar serving as the start/finish area. Experience crashing waves, salty air, hard packed sand, ocean breezes, and open beaches on this out and back course. Wind down after the race with sand between your toes and enjoy a beer, a margarita, or seafood to mark the occasion.


XTERRA SAN TAN 2018 8k, 14m

Date: Nov 11 2018

Location:Tempe, AZ

Description: Mother Nature has done all the work on this one and we definitely don’t need to add any additional obstacles. A challenging 14 mile course leads you thru San Tan Regional Park, Malpais wash, barreling down Dynamite and up and over Goldmine, while the 8k course gives you a glimpse of everything the Sonoran Desert has to offer.


Wolf Pack Trail Run and Relay 50M, 43.5M, 29M, 14.5M, 4.5M

Location: Kansasville , Wisconsin

Description: Who doesn’t love the sound of leaves crunching beneath your feet and the crispness of the air on a November day?

Wolf Pack Trail Run and Relay is the perfect way to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the fall season.

Richard Bong State Recreation Area is the host for this fall ultra-event. Once designated to be a jet fighter base, the park is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America’s leading air ace during World War II. The recreation area encompasses 4,515 acres of rolling grassland, savanna, wetlands, and scattered woodland. Nature is on display all around and is constantly changing with the seasons.


Topanga Turkey Trot

Date: November 22, 2018

Location: Trippet Ranch in Topanga State Park

Description: The XTERRA Turkey Trot is race #2 of the series and features three exciting courses: the 15k, 10k and the 5k fun run on the scenic trails at Trippet Ranch in Topanga State Park on November 22, 2018. The event field is limited, so enter early. This event normally sells out in early November, so don’t wait! See below for course preview run details.

NOTE: The event is on Thanksgiving Day! What better way to say thanks than running on the trails at Topanga State Park!

The 5k is a fun run – we do give out finisher medals, but we do not award age group medals. We will be posting times for all events at the race and online.


Jackson County 50-50 50M, 50K, 10M

Date: December 1, 2018

Location: Brownstown, Indiana

Description: Challenge yourself to another level at the Jackson County 50-50. Very challenging topography rewards you with fantastic vistas along the ridgetops in Jackson-Washington State Forest. Each lap will take you around two different and beautiful lakes and to the highest point in Jackson county.

Though the course is rugged, Pyoca Camp, Conference, and Retreat Center balances that out with warm, dry places to eat, sleep, shower, and gather before and after the race. We’ve partnered with the camp to bring you affordable weekend-long packages including full meals on Friday night, Saturday post-race, and Sunday recovery breakfast.

The course is a 10-mile loop with approximately 1,600 feet of vertical gain per lap (for comparison, about 25% more average elevation gain per mile than Tecumseh Trail Marathon). The trail is a mix of double-track (fire road style) trail and single-track narrow trail. About 3/4 mile of the course is on a paved road within the State Forest. Aid stations will be located every 2-4 miles along the route, and each lap will pass within feet of Pyoca’s lodge building; offering warmth, restrooms, and access to your personal stash of food, clothing, and other needs.


Bagan Temple Marathon

Location: Bagan, Myanmar

Description: Tucked away in central Myanmar and home to more than 2,000 temples, Bagan’s beauty and historical significance is unsurpassed. Sacred pagodas and beautiful temples are scattered across the plains of Bagan creating a mystical, striking landscape. The marathon course will take runners on a voyage of discovery into this alluring and untouched land.



Wildwood Trail Marathon 26.2m

Date: December 2, 2018

Location: Wildwood, MO

Description: Presented by Terrain Trail Runners, Wildwood Trail Marathon is a great wrap up to any runners racing season whether you run road or trail, novice or experienced the course will not disappoint.

The event will be held at LaSalle Springs Middle School located in Wildwood, Mo, on December 2, 2018. There will be miles and miles of great running through some of the beautiful trails in West County, St. Louis, Mo.
The course will be a combination of approximately 2 miles of asphalt Hamilton-Carr trail, gravel, dirt and 90 percent single track with enough rocks and roots to keep you present.
